Have you discovered that your metabolism slows with age? Did you know the average woman gains 1 and a 1/2 pounds a year during her adult life. Gosh, that means by the time you are forty you have added 40 or more pounds.

What can we do?

There is new research that we can use to crank ourselves back up again. Here are some tips that could help.

Eat breakfast. There is nothing like starting your body engine with energy like breakfast. Better yet, eat five small meals instead of three large ones. Spreading calories throughout the day keeps blood sugar levels even and controls the release of insulin that can cause your body to store more calories as fat.

Drink more water. Drinking 6 cups of cold water a day can raise a resting metabolism by about 50 calories daily, or enough to shed 5 pounds in a year.

In the area of exercise, change your routine. Replacing one exercise can create enough of a surprise to keep your calories burning. The first week of every month, do a new upper-body exercise, the second week, a new lower-body, and the third, a new abs move. On the fourth week, try a different kind of cardio like cycling.
